On October 20th, 2023 we had the privilege of hosting the Mexico Pre-Ball dinner for the Meridian Ball for the third time. His Excellency Esteban Moctezuma, Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, and his wife, Cecilia, co-hosted with us this year.

Public diplomacy is the foundation for building enduring relationships between Mexico and the USA, and these events offer a fantastic opportunity to showcase it.

The North Capital Forum 2023, which took place in Mexico City from October 4th to 6th, drew a crowd of over 700 attendees and featured more than 40 panels and engaging conversations led by 150+ prominent speakers. This event achieved remarkable success and established itself as the premier and most significant gathering centered on North America.

On July 27th, we had the distinct honor of hosting a meeting in Washington, D.C. that brought together the Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila, the Ambassador of Mexico in the USA, Esteban Moctezuma, and members of our Board of Directors. During this significant gathering, we engaged in a candid and insightful discussion about pressing issues concerning the state of Baja California and the border region. Our conversations revolved around strategies to foster a deeper understanding and cooperation within the region, aiming to create a better environment for all involved.

The U.S.-Mexico Foundation and the Mexico Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center held an Ambassadors Retreat in Palo Alto and New Year, California, from April 27th to 30th, 2023. In this third retreat, former ambassadors from the United States to Mexico, from Mexico to the United States, and special guests from Canada were called upon to discuss the present and future of the bilateral relationship. More than 15 former ambassadors, the Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., and business leaders joined us. We had the opportunity to visit the offices of HP and Oracle, where we had very interesting conversations about supply chains and the use of technology in them, as well as discussions about educational collaboration.

Over the course of four days, the former ambassadors discussed the most important topics in the bilateral relationship, including the economy, workforce developments, security, soft power, and migration, with the expectation that the ideas presented will strengthen the bilateral relationship.

The CBI and TAMU School of Law had the opportunity to visit the KBH Desalination Plant in El Paso came together to discuss the future of sustainable water management. The event featured a presentation from the Texas A&M law students, who shared insights on transboundary water issues as part of the environmental and natural resources systems clinic.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in productive discussions about sustainable water management and the challenges associated with transboundary water issues. The event provided a valuable platform for exploring potential solutions and strategies to address these challenges.

On April 11th, the US-Mexico Foundation hosted a meeting with His Excellency, Esteban Moctezuma, Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, and a variety of private sector representatives with operations in Mexico to discuss the opportunities to grow their presence in Mexico and discuss the importance of private sector participation in North America.

On February 9th, the U.S.-Mexico Foundation helped coordinate a series of meetings for Samuel García, Gov. of Nuevo León, and his team. Encouraging collaborations between local governments is key to bring our countries together.

In early February, we met with the Secretary of Economic Development, and president of AMSDE, Marco del Prete, with whom we spoke about the bilateral collaboration between Querétaro and the United States through participation in educational programs and public diplomacy.

On January 31st, the US-Mexico Foundation hosted a roundtable with Rep. Tony Gonzales, and a variety of  private sector representatives interested in promoting US-Mexico collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, near-shoring, energy, among other topics.

On January 24th, the US-Mexico Foundation received a group of 20 undergraduate students of International Relations and Law from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, campus Guadalajara at the International Student House of Washington, D.C. Students had the opportunity of hearing the different programs and activities carried out by the USMF in favor of the bilateral relation, as well as the experience of USMF staff, several of which are EXATEC, graduates of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

On January 19th, the U.S. – Mexico Think Tank Summit took place at the Center for the United States and Mexico from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. The event was sponsored by the U.S. – Mexico Foundation, Mexico Evalua, the Atlas Network, and Grupo ICB. Twenty-four think tanks from the United States and Mexico attended, aiming to strengthen the relationship between organizations that work on binational issues. Workshops were held during the day to discuss the challenges and opportunities for organizations in both countries, as well as common areas of study and agendas for collaboration to strengthen institutional capacity and outreach on relevant public policy issues. Enrique Perret, Managing Director of the U.S. – Mexico Foundation, shared with the organizations the commitment of the foundation to create significant links between research institutions to encourage joint projects.

The agenda ended with a public event, "Exploring the Role of Think Tanks in the U.S. – Mexico Relationship" with an introduction by Tony Payan, Director of the Center for the United States and Mexico, and a panel with the participation of Juan Pardinas, General Editorial Director of Reforma, Julio Portales, President of Grupo ICB, and Clare Ribando Seelke, Specialist in Latin American Affairs at the Congressional Research Service. The panelists discussed the importance of the information that think tanks produce for their sectors, innovative ways of communicating, and recommendations to increase the impact of their research with different audiences.

As Emilio Cadena and Ivan Zapien conclude their term as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board, we'd like to thank them for their support, guidance and for always encouraging us to reach beyond our goals.

It’s not a goodbye, since they will still be involved in the organization.

In mid December, we had a delegation of Mexican Think Tanks in Washington, DC. During these days they met with representatives of organizations in the city, in order to learn from each other, and open horizons to create new strategies and share their work.

As a supporting institution of the Americas Competitiveness Exchange, the U.S.-Mexico Foundation joined the #ACXchange on Nov. 13-17 in Quito, Ecuador; with +70 stakeholders from the Americas, a region of 1 billion people and endless opportunities.

USMF’s Axel Cabrera engaged in a week-long exchange of views and best practices on competitiveness, economic development, ally-shoring, innovation, fintech, circular economy, and venture capital.

The #ACXchange included a message from Hon. Guillermo Lasso, President of Ecuador, and the participation of high-level government officials and diplomatic corps in the country. Panels and meetings venues included Palacio de Carondelet (Ecuador’s Presidential Palace), Quito’s Airport, and some of the most relevant Equadorian industries and universities.

The first edition of the North Capital Forum was held on September 28-30, 2022 in Mexico City.

On June 5, within the framework of the Summit of the Americas 2022, the U.S.-Mexico Foundation organized a dinner in the historic "Herald-Examiner Building", to discuss important issues between Mexico and the United States.

We thank our Council Members, Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma, Friends, Allies and Sponsors (ASU and Entravisión) for their assistance, working together we can achieve more!

On May 6, we signed, for the second consecutive year, a collaboration agreement with AMSDE, to promote the USMexico 360 program; where State Development Secretaries are trained on Mexico-US bilateral issues.

We hosted a Cinco de Mayo Party with the Corn Refiners Association, Hispanic Lobbyists Association and Constellation Brands.

We are so grateful to all the people who came to celebrate Mexico on this day!

We are happy to have partnered with GUGAMS, LAPA and the Georgetown Americas Institute, for The Gathering, where Mexican students from east coast Ivy League universities converge in discussions with experts on what can be done to improve the bilateral relationship.

We had the pleasure to host a meeting/panel on Saturday, April 9th, where our Board Member, Antonio Ortiz-Mena and other panelists discussed the importance of having a healthy bilateral relationship, strong institutions and accountability & USMCA

We appreciate the words by Consul Rafael Laveaga on his perspectives about the relationship between our countries to end the session.

On Sunday, April 10th, our Director, Enrique Perret, was a panelist alongside Carin Zissis, in The Gathering, they talked about the importance of civil society in the bilateral relation.

Our Board Member Jana Nelson, and our YAC, Alma Caballero shared a panel with women in DC about gender roles in the bilateral relationship.

These meetings are important to be held, since joining forces can only serve for a betterment of the bilateral relationship, and to each country individually.

For Mexican students abroad, having conversations with key actors in the relationship is vital for their development.

On March 15, the Governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, as part of her visit to the US capital, met with Mexican Master's students at Georgetown University.

In collaboration with the Institute of the Americas of Georgetown, the Organization of Mexicans in Georgetown (GUGAMS) and LAPA, we made this very pleasant conversation possible.

The Governor is a former student of said University, which represents a clear example for these students of what can be achieved.

During the visit of Governor Maru Campos (the week of March 14), we had the opportunity to meet with members of our Board and American business leaders with investments in the state of Chihuahua.

We witnessed the signing of a collaboration agreement between Amazon and the government of Chihuahua, in order to bring innovation to the region.

Teamwork to strengthen institutions, through technology, is necessary to improve them.

On march 2nd we hosted, in partnership with the International Student House, a fundraising dinner with Chef and TV Host, Pati Jinich. She took us on a delicacy journey, through culinary education.

Guests were able to sample Gran Centenario tequilas and learn about the different kinds and flavors. we had book signing and we were able to dine on recipes from Pati’s most recent book “Treasures of the Mexican Table”

On December 14th, 2021 we hosted a lunch in honor of Ambassador of the US to Mexico, Ken Salazar, in Mexico City.

Bringing business and civic leaders closer to him, helps build a better relation between our countries.

On December 2-4, 2021 we hosted the second edition of our program: Convocation. This is a annual retreat with former Ambassadors of the bilateral relationship, in which several topics are discussed.

Additionally, a report with recommendations based on these talks will be published soon.

On November 16th, 2021 we hosted a meeting with Mexican Senators in Washington, DC. The conversation was very interesting, we talked about energy, migration & Ally shoring.

We are glad they heard about what we are doing, and the opportunities we see in the bilateral relationship.
